Best Fujifilm Instax Camera

Best Fujifilm Instax Camera

The name Fujifilm Instax stands for a range of instant cameras from the Japanese manufacturer Fujifilm. The first Instax instant cameras were introduced back in 1999.

Since then, Fujifilm Instax instant cameras have enjoyed great popularity.

However, the Fujifilm Instax series not only stands for instant cameras but also suitable films, printers, and accessories.

Fujifilm Instax instant camera models

Over the years there have been numerous Instax series models on the market.

The Instax series currently consists of the following models: Instax Mini 8, Instax Mini 9, Instax Mini 25, Instax Mini 70, Instax Mini 90 Neo Classic, Instax Square SQ6, Instax Square SQ10 and Instax Wide 300.

That’s a lot of models, isn’t it?

At first glance, such a large range can, of course, be confusing. Which instant camera should you buy?

But don’t worry, actually choosing the right Instax instant camera is very easy. In the following guide, we will tell you how to choose the right Fujifilm Instax camera.

Fujifilm Instax film formats and sizes

First of all, you should know that Instax cameras come in 3 different image formats. Only one type of film with a certain film format fits in each model.

So it depends on the Instax camera, in what size you can take pictures with it. Therefore, you should of course carefully consider which format you prefer before buying.

Once you have chosen a Fujifilm Instax instant camera, you can no longer change the image format.

There are currently three different Fujifilm Instax film formats. These formats are minisquare and wide.

Note: The designation of these film formats can also be found in the name of the respective Instax instant camera model. This way it is immediately clear which film format you need for the respective Instax camera.

All Instax film formats have in common that they always have a height of 86 mm (picture with frame) or 62 mm (picture only). However, there are clear differences in the width of the picture.

In the following image, you can see the different Instax film formats in comparison. With this, you can get a good impression of the respective formats. The photograph area is in color, whereas the frame is shown in black.

Instax film formats

You can find the correct size in millimeters in the following table. Here too, a distinction is made between the actual image size and the image size with a frame.

ModelImage sizeImage size with frame
Mini62 x 46 mm (H x W)86 x 54 mm (H x W)
Wide62 mm × 99 mm (H x W)86 cm x 108 mm (H x W)
Square62 x 62 mm (H x W)86 x 72 mm (H x W)

So now that you know the different image formats, it’s time to choose the right Instax instant camera.

This instant camera is also ideal for group shots because it comes with a self-timer. There is also an electronic image counter, a close-up function, a tripod thread and a second trigger for convenient snapping in portrait and landscape format.

The possibility of making a double exposure with this camera is also particularly beautiful. This creates fascinating photos with two motifs lying on top of each other on an instant picture.

We can say that the Instax Mini 90 Neo Classic is the best Instax instant camera in the Mini series.

Advanced users and lovers of the square format: Instax Square SQ6 and Instax Square SQ10

The Instax pictures in mini format are very practical, but simply too small for some. That is understandable.

If you would like to have slightly larger images, you can opt for an Instax camera that outputs images in square format.

The square format has the dimensions 62 x 62 mm (H x W) or 86 x 72 mm (H x W) with a frame and is, therefore, more reminiscent of classic Polaroid images from the past.

Instax instant film cameras that offer this square format are the Instax Square SQ6 and the Instax Square SQ10.

Instax Square SQ6

The Instax Square SQ6 shines with its chic design and is available in the three trendy color variants Blush Gold, Pearl White, and Graphite Gray. This camera offers you many different shooting modes, a light / dark mode and a macro mode for close-ups.

The three colored flash filters that come with the Instax Square SQ6 are particularly great.

This allows very nice effects to be achieved and the creative scope is expanded enormously.

Instax Square SQ10

The Instax Square SQ10 stands out clearly from the previous cameras since it is a hybrid instant camera. So with this camera, you dive into the digital world.

The 3-inch display gives you the option of viewing the captured image before exposing the film. If you don’t like the picture, you can simply delete it.

So you can take a lot of photos, and only then, after viewing the pictures, decide which one you want to “print”. So you don’t waste expensive film on failed pictures. Of course, this has several advantages.

With this camera, you can, of course, save the digital images on your computer.

With the Instax Square SQ10, you can also have long exposure and double exposure, which gives you maximum scope for creativity. Color filters, vignetting and many other features are also available.

Fans of the really big pictures: Instax Wide 300

If the square format is still too small for you, you can choose the Instax Wide 300 for the only Instax camera that can handle the wide format. The wide-format has the dimensions 62 mm × 99 mm (H x W) or 86 cm x 108 mm (H x W) with frame.

Images of this format are wider and offer the most space of all Instax cameras.

Instax Wide 300

Because the images of the Instax Wide 300 are almost as wide as two Instax Mini images next to each other, the dimensions of this camera are correspondingly large.

The Instax Wide 300 is thus the largest of the Instax cameras presented so far. This can sometimes be a disadvantage when it comes to portability.

But sometimes it is worth accepting this disadvantage. Since the wide pictures of this camera are very impressive.

The Instax Wide 300 does not shine primarily through its features – these are quite clear. This model just focuses on wide images.

Fujifilm Instax Printer

If you don’t like any of the Instax instant cameras and you prefer to take pictures with your smartphone, but you still like the format and style of the instant photos, you can simply choose an Instax printer.

So you have practically combined the best of both worlds.

In practice, this works very simply. You simply have to transfer an image from your smartphone to an Instax Printer via WiFi and a trendy instant image is printed out.

All you need is the Instax SHARE app, with which you can even take pictures directly.

With the Instax Share SP-2 and the Instax Share SP-3, Fujifilm offers two different Instax printers.

In our review of the two instant photo printers, Instax Share SP-2 and Instax Share SP-3, you can find more information about the two devices and the associated app.

Fujifilm Instax Share SP-2 Printer

The Instax Share SP-2 Printer is available in the two metallic colors silver and gold. You can charge the printer’s battery via a USB port.

There is also an indication of the battery charge status, a display of the still available photos and a function for repeat printing.

It is important to know that the Instax Share SP-2 printer prints in the Instax Mini format. Accordingly, you also need a Fujifilm instant color film “Instax Mini” for this printer.

Fujifilm Instax Share SP-3 Printer

If the mini format is too small for you, then you can opt for the Instax Share SP-3 Printer. In principle, this printer has the same functions as the Instax Share SP-2, but prints your pictures transmitted via WLAN in the popular square format.

The Share SP-3 is also available in two colors, namely in white with silver accents and black with copper-colored accents.

Fujifilm Instax films

One thing is very important. No matter which Instax instant photo camera or which Instax printer you choose, always remember to buy the appropriate Instax films.

Otherwise, you will be disappointed when you open your camera at home and cannot take pictures with it because you do not have a film.

Reminder: The film format is always in the name of the respective camera model.
For example, if you buy an Instax Mini 9 instant camera, you need an Instax Mini film.
With Instax Square SQ6, you need an Instax Square film.
If you buy an Instax Wide 300, you will need an Instax Wide Film.

The good thing is that there are usually different versions of the respective film format. This gives you even more options to let your creativity run free.

For example, if you have an Instax Mini 9 camera, you can choose the Instax Mini film with a white frame or the Instax Mini Black film with a black frame.

If you prefer something a little more colorful, there are Instax Mini Candypop film with colored dots on the frame, or an Instax Mini Skyblue film with a frame in the color of a cloudless summer sky.

That was not all. Some other colorful picture frames are also available.

Fujifilm Instax albums

If you take a lot of pictures with your Instax camera, then you should keep these pictures, in a protected place.

An Instax album is suitable for this purpose.

Fujifilm Instax conclusion

Hopefully, now you know the Fujifilm Instax world a little and know which different Instax instant cameras are available, which Instax image formats exist and how you can get cool instant photos from your smartphone.
