Different types of photography with the bridge camera

The bridge camera combines various aspects of compact cameras and SLR cameras with each other and is therefore suitable for both beginners and professionals. If you are interested in getting a bridge camera and would like to know which images you can use it for, you have come to the right place.

In the following article, we will introduce you to five types of photography and describe why the bridge camera is more or less suitable for them.

What distinguishes a bridge camera?

The bridge camera, as already indicated, bridges the gap between the compact camera and the SLR camera. It offers various advantages, but also one or the other disadvantage.

What is particularly characteristic of the bridge camera is its more compact design compared to the SLR camera. They also have the above-average zoom range which is why it is often referred to as a super-zoom camera.

The lens of the bridge camera cannot be changed but covers a large area. The size of the camera’s sensor is between that of a compact camera and that of an SLR camera.

What types of photography are there?

Since the emergence of photo technology in the 19th century, photography has continued to develop and become established in various areas of life. Photography is used for various purposes such as pleasure, work, and art.

Since the list is very long, we have selected five of the most important types of photography, which we will briefly introduce below, to explain to what extent a bridge camera is suitable or not.

The five types of photography are:

  • Landscape photography
  • Nature photography
  • Sports photography
  • Architectural photography
  • Indoor photography

For most types of photography, you should get a tripod. This way you can better focus the image section that you want to photograph.

What types of photography is a bridge camera suitable for?

In the following part, we will introduce you to the types of photography. We will describe what constitutes this, which aspects are particularly important and how well a bridge camera is suitable for this.

Landscape photography

In landscape photography, a large moving or section of the environment is photographed. For example, natural landscapes such as mountains or man-made made such as parks and architecture.

Since you want to photograph a large area, the depth of field is an important aspect of landscape photography. It is best to use a wide-angle lens. If you take pictures during the day, the light intensity is rather irrelevant.

With the bridge camera, you can take qualitative pictures, since it has a good lens, which allows, among other things, pictures with wide-angle. During the day, you can also take beautiful landscape photos with simple compact cameras, but you will notice the weaker natural light.

When taking pictures in the dark, your best option is with an SLR camera. If you travel long distances on foot, compact cameras or bridge cameras are probably the better choice. This is because they are lighter and you do not need as much additional equipment.

Nature photography

Nature photography is dedicated to the natural environment. For example, parts of landscape photography or animal photography.

In this area of photography, it is primarily a matter of presenting the images naturally. That is why we often work with simpler cameras and daylight.

Which camera and which settings are used for the pictures strongly depends on what exactly you want to take pictures of.

For example, a wide-angle lens is suitable for taking pictures of extensive landscapes, and a telephoto lens is more suitable for detailed close-ups.

The bridge camera is very suitable for nature photography since it is easier to transport than a single-lens reflex camera. It also has a built-in lens that covers all areas from wide-angle to telephoto.

Of course, the different bridge cameras vary in their functions, which is why you should pay attention to which type of nature photography you prefer.

Sports photography

Sports photography is characterized by the fact that it records fast movements in a way that the human eye cannot perceive. Usually, the pictures are taken in close-up, with a blurred background.

A strong telephoto lens is recommended for this type of photography since it works with a shallow depth of field.

The focus is on the movement. Often the photographer has to follow the action with the camera, which is why it shouldn’t be too big and heavy.

The bridge camera is not necessarily the first choice for sports shots, compact digital cameras with light telephoto lenses are better suited here so that photography is not too strenuous.

Smaller bridge camera models are certainly also suitable.

Sports photography is not just limited to taking pictures of athletes and sporting events but includes all photos that are made of fast movements.

Architectural photography

This type of photography deals with the depiction of architecture. These buildings are photographed either in the planning, the creation or in the finished state. The latter is probably the most common form of architectural photography.

With this type of shot, the details of the structure are particularly important, which is why the image should be as sharp as possible. The depth of field, in particular, plays an important role. However, it is also important whether the photographer wants to photograph a complete building, only a part or only a very small detail.

A lens with a small focal length is suitable for overall shots; a wide-angle lens would be ideal. For detailed shots, however, you should rather use a telephoto lens.

If you do not want to decide whether you want to depict buildings as a whole or in detail, the bridge camera is very suitable. Since the lens is suitable for every type of shot, making a change unnecessary.

However, if you attach more importance to the quality of the photos and are willing to invest in a good lens, you should rather use an SLR camera.

Indoor photography

Indoor photography means that you take photos in closed rooms, the motif can vary. An example of indoor photography is portrait photography.

Light plays a crucial role in this type of photography.

Do not use flash here, as this would negatively affect the image result. It is best to use wide-angle lenses with a short focal length. If you don’t have a tripod, an image stabilizer is an advantage.

You can take good indoor shots with all types of cameras if you use the right settings.

Normally, the pictures get better, the higher the quality of the camera, especially in low light.

Since the bridge camera combines several properties of compact cameras and single-lens reflex cameras, it is suitable for most types of photography.

The bridge camera is particularly practical for those who travel long distances and who sometimes need close and distant settings.

The SLR camera is still ahead of the pack for professional picture quality and especially low-light photography.

For more demanding types of shooting, where the photographer has to move a lot and sometimes quickly, one should rather use high-quality digital cameras with a suitable lens.
