Chic design for instant photo fans

The Instax Mini 9 is quite compact: the camera, which weighs almost

1 pounds, has dimensions of 9.1 x 9.1 x 9.1 inches. Its lightweight and compact size make it easy to carry around.

The device is well made but exudes a bit of the flair of a children’s camera. Well, of course, it’s a matter of taste.

Self-portrait instant photo

You don’t necessarily associate an instant camera with selfies.

Thanks to a clever selfie mirror next to the lens, it is relatively easy to take a picture here.

Simple operation

The operation of the instant camera is really easy: switch on, the brightness is determined automatically (but can also be adjusted manually), snap – done!

A close-up lens adapter is included in the packaging so that even subjects that are 35 – 50 cm in front of the lens can be photographed. The normal lens has a focal length of 60 mm and a shutter speed of 1/60 s.

Credit card format pictures

The most exciting moment that comes with an instant camera is after clicking the photograph. The picture slowly moves out of the camera and develops in front of our eyes.

The size of the pictures corresponds approximately to the credit card format. The image quality is okay, with the so-called high-key mode it is still possible to achieve a somewhat softer focus.

After the photographs come out, you should not swirl it back and forth as you may be used to with other instant cameras. The picture develops itself, shaking it wildly can damage the picture quality.

Expensive pleasure

The camera itself is not too expensive, but the film packs are rather expensive in comparison. Depending on the offer, a picture can cost 80 to 90 cents. So you’d better think twice before pressing the trigger button.

Pros:

  • Cheap camera
  • Nice design
  • Selfie mode
  • Easy handling
  • Cool instant image feeling

Cons:

  • Pictures rather expensive
  • No double or long exposure
  • No display

Is Instax Mini 9 worth buying?

The Fujifilm Instax Mini 9 is a good model for beginners and hobby photographers. The camera convinces with its simple handling and its reasonable price.

The ease of use makes it suitable for users of all ages. Although the camera hardly offers different modes, the included and available accessories allow you to create varied photos. The built-in selfie mirror also makes it perfect for self-portraits.

Instax Mini 9 image size

A very important feature of any instant camera is, of course, the size of the picture. Because this is firmly defined and can no longer be changed.

The Instax Mini 9 takes pictures in the popular Instax Mini format. This is the smallest format in the field of instant cameras. In the Instax world, there are currently 3 different image sizes.

The first format in this series is the mini format. An Instax Mini picture has the following size:

62 x 46 mm (H x W) image size

86 x 54 mm (H x W) image size with frame

Films

Now that you know the image format of the Instax Mini 9 camera, you can be sure about which size films to buy. These are the Instax Mini films.

It is nice that there is a fairly large selection in the area of Instax Mini Films.

Instax Mini films are available, for example, with a white border, with a black border or with different colored patterns on the border. There is also a monochrome (black and white) film for the Instax Mini cameras.

Here you can let your creativity run free and you can always choose other films to influence the overall impression of your Instax Mini pictures.

Exposure setting

The Instax Mini 9 has a built-in light sensor. These are the two small holes next to the flash. You must not cover these holes with your fingers, otherwise, the camera can of course no longer measure the lighting conditions correctly.

When the Instax Mini 9 measures the lighting conditions, it shows the correct exposure settings with a small red light above the symbols on the lens.

However, you have to set the correct exposure setting yourself, the camera does not do this for you.

However, this is very simple. All you have to do is turn the wheel on the lens so that the small dot is over the red light.

Recording area of the Instax Mini 9

The Instax Mini 9 has a shooting range from 0.6 meters to infinity. This means that you should not come closer than 60 cm to your subject, otherwise the image will be blurred.

But now there is another peculiarity. Because the camera comes with a close-up lens that you can simply put on the front of the lens. With this close-up lens, the recording area changes to 35 – 50 cm.

With this close-up lens, you can take pictures of very close objects. This close-up lens is also ideal for selfies. So that selfies work well, there is a selfie mirror right next to the lens, in which you can see yourself.

However, if you are using the close-up lens, you should make sure that the middle ring in the viewfinder is not directly in the middle of the object, but rather a bit at the top center.

Automatic flash

The Instax Mini 9 has a built-in flash that you cannot turn off. Instant cameras always need a lot of light, which is why it is almost always photographed with flash anyway.

This flash has a range of 0.6 – 2.7 meters. So you should make sure that your subject is not further than this range if you rely on the flash.

It is always better to take pictures in bright daylight than in dark rooms.

High-key mode

The high-key mode gives you nice soft-focus effects without the need for a lens or filter. The high-key mode of the Instax Mini 9 creates a softer impression than other settings for smooth edges. This mode is ideal for portraits and self-portraits.

If you are interested in this mode but are looking for an alternative Polaroid camera, we recommend Fujifilm Instax Mini 70 and the Fujifilm Instax Mini 90 Neo.

Great for selfies

Although the Instax Mini 9 does not have a front camera, it is very suitable for selfies. As usual with the Instax series, Fujifilm uses a mirror next to the lens.

So you can perfectly align your selfie to your needs and reduce unsuitable snapshots many times over.

Easy to use

With the Instax Mini 9 instant camera, you can fill your photo album with wonderful memories in no time. Thanks to the easy-to-use camera system, you can click perfect pictures in n time.

Switch on, select the setting and you can snap your pictures!

Your image will be automatically developed and printed within a few seconds.

Accessories for the Instax Mini 9

Fujifilm offers in-house accessories, but there are also suitable accessories from third-party manufacturers.

Since the improvements of the camera are mainly limited to the technical area, the accessories of the Instax Mini 8 can also be used for the Instax Mini 9.

Conclusion on the Instax Mini 9

The differences to the Instax Mini 8 are smaller than expected. Little has changed on the outside, the shape is the same as in the previous model.

Technically, Fujifilm has upgraded the high-key mode as well as the option of macro recording. This creates new creative design options with the camera. Nevertheless, we would have preferred to have another mode, be it long exposure and/or double exposure.
